Before October 1, 2019, it was not necessary to have a New Zealand visa before traveling to the country. As Austrians, you belong to the so-called Visa Waiver countries. Upon entering, you were only checked whether you met the requirements for entering, and then you received an (electronic) stamp in your passport, and you were allowed to stay in the country for 3 months.
An NZeTA visa for Austria is the best choice for many travelers: cheap, easy to arrange, and valid for a stay of up to 3 months. You may not work with an NZeTA, but you may apply for a business visa for a job. Volunteering is also not allowed, but you can study for a maximum of 3 months to 12 months of a period.

An NZeTA is valid for 2 years from the moment of award. During this period, you can enter and leave New Zealand as many times as you want. Each stay can be a maximum of 3 consecutive months and in 12 months you can spend a maximum of 6 months in New Zealand with an NZeTA.
Providing your new passport number before traveling to New Zealand visa for Austrian citizen is required if you have received another passport after your NZeTA has been issued, for example, because your previous passport has expired or been lost. Your NZeTA can then be linked electronically to your new passport if you do so.
