Transit NZeTA for Bermuda passport holders

First, which passport do you hold?

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, and Bermudians can hold different types of passport. New Zealand decides your status by the passport you travel on, so start here:

If you have both, it's usually easier to travel to New Zealand on the British citizen passport. Whichever you choose, the passport on your NZeTA must be the one you show to the airline and at the border.

What "transit only" means for Bermudians

As a transit visa-waiver traveller, you can pass through New Zealand on the way somewhere else without a transit visa. You need an NZeTA, which has been compulsory since 1 October 2019. It is valid for up to 2 years, so it will cover the outbound and return legs of a long trip, and future journeys too.

What you can't do is enter New Zealand as a visitor after flying in. You can't leave the airport, check into a hotel in the city or take a domestic flight.

Conditions for transiting through Auckland

• You arrive at and depart from Auckland International Airport. No other New Zealand airport offers visa-free transit.
• You stay in the international transit area for the whole stop.
• Your time in transit is 24 hours or less.
• You hold a confirmed ticket to a third country.
• You meet the entry rules of your final destination.

Planning a holiday? You'll need a visitor visa

Bermudians travelling on a Bermuda-issued passport who want to stay in New Zealand, even for a weekend, must apply for a visitor visa. This is a separate application made to the New Zealand immigration authorities, and it is not handled through our NZeTA service. Allow plenty of time, because a visitor visa takes longer than an NZeTA and needs more supporting documents.

If you're eligible for a British citizen passport but haven't got one yet, consider whether applying for it before your trip would make your journey simpler.

Cruising to New Zealand

Cruise passengers are treated differently. Anyone arriving on a cruise ship, whatever their nationality, must hold an NZeTA and can apply as a visitor. That includes travellers on Bermuda-issued passports. You can then go ashore at each New Zealand port of call.

Applying for a transit NZeTA

The form takes about 10 minutes. Have your passport, a recent face photo and a payment card ready.

1. Select your travel purpose

   Choose transit if you're changing planes in Auckland, or visit if you're arriving by cruise ship.

2. Add your passport details

   The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your travel date. Enter your name exactly as it appears on it.

3. Answer questions and upload a photo

   Short health and character questions, then a clear photo of your face.

4. Pay and track

   Pay by card, then track progress on the status page.

Planning the journey from Bermuda

Bermuda has direct flights to several cities in the United States and Canada and to London. To reach Australia or the South Pacific, most travellers connect in North America and then fly across the Pacific, sometimes via Auckland. Journeys of 30 hours or more are common, so plan rest stops carefully. Remember that you'll also need the right travel authority for any US or Canadian connection.
